With a vibrant sound and an excellent dramatic sense, critically acclaimed tenor, Matthew DiBattista, frequently performs throughout the United States and made his European debut as soloist in Mozart’s Requiem at the Hundred Days Festival in Lisbon, Portugal. This festival included the world premiere of Gerhard Samuel’s Hyacinth From Apollo, written specifically for Mr. DiBattista and recorded on Vienna Modern Masters
Mr. DiBattista has recently returned to Boston where he will soon make his debut with Boston Lyric Opera under the baton of conductor Keith Lockhart as Goro in Madama Butterfly. He made his debut with Opera Boston as Louis in the North American premiere of Angels in America and will soon sing Jack O’Brien in The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. In 2005-2006 Matthew and his wife, Soprano, Megan Tillmann made their romantic debut with the Boston Classical Orchestra in With a Song in My Heart, a duet Concert in Boston’s Historic Faneuil Hall including David Kravitz and Majie Zeller. Mr. DiBattista was also soloist in Catulli Carmina with the Bel Canto Chorus in Milwaukee, Mass in Time of War with the Master Works Chorale, the Messiah with the Assabet Valley Mastersingers and Mozart’s Requiem with Coro Allegro at Sanders Theatre in Boston.
The 2004-2005 season included a performance as George Hancock in Margaret Garner at Michigan Opera. Singing opposite his wife, Megan Tillmann, Mr. DiBattista was Martin in The Tender Land at Opera Omaha, Rinuccio in Dorothy Danner’s production of Gianni Schicchi at Skylight Opera, and Nanki-Poo in The Mikado at Mississippi Opera. Matthew and Megan recently performed The Tender Land excerpts at a benefit concert for the Milwaukee Public Schools, raising thousands of dollars to promote music education. Mr. DiBattista also made his debut with Coro Allegro as soloist in The Witness Cantata by former Ambassador to Austria, Swanee Hunt.
Past seasons have included some exciting opera credits as Mr. DiBattista created the role of Wesley in the Emmy Award nominated opera, Central Park on PBS’ Great Performances (Glimmerglass Opera). He sang the role of Martin in the first PBS Broadcast of The Tender Land about which Opera News said, “Tenor Matthew DiBattista was a darkly handsome, ardent romantic interest as Martin. He partnered Laurie (Megan Tillmann) well in their several duet scenes, showing excellent enunciation and ringing high notes.” The San Antonio Express News said about Mr. DiBattista’s Alfred in Die Fledermaus: “Matthew DiBattista’s clean, agile tenor and superb stage presence were made for the role of Alfred.” Other roles he has performed include Ernesto in Don Pasquale and Ralph Rackstraw in H.M.S Pinafore with Skylight Opera, Dr. Blind in Die Fledermaus with Kentucky Opera, Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance with Whitewater/Sorg Opera, Count Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Lehigh Opera, Dr. Caius in Falstaff, and Andrew Johnson in The Mother of Us All at Glimmerglass Opera.
Mr. DiBattista’s concert credits include the Cincinnati May Festival’s Rachmaninoff Vespers, about which American Record Guide said, “Matthew DiBattista was tenor soloist and sounded remarkably Russian – and ecstatic hovering in radiance above the gentle keening of the chorus. His singing of the ‘Nunc Dimittis’ was a mystical high point.” His performance of the Evangelist in the St. John Passion with the Boston University Symphony Chorus and Orchestra was also well received. Notable guest appearances include the Cincinnati Symphony, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the MEC Ensemble of Los Angeles, the Mozart Society Orchestra, the Cincinnati Philharmonia, the Cincinnati Contemporary Music Ensemble, and the Knox Music Series.
