Autumn ConcertSaturday, November 16, 2002, 8:00 PM Maurice Duruflé: Requiem Op. 9 Duruflé's Requiem is one of the most earthly and moving musical settings of the requiem text. It is not an ethereal or detached expression but rather musically translates human feelings before their terrifying, unexplainable, or consoling destiny. Noble's fresh and new (commissioned by AVM in 1998) setting of Dryden's "A Song for St. Cecilia's Day" gives new expression to the opening text "From heavenly harmony this universal frame began." |

Spring ConcertSunday, March 9, 2003, 4:00 PM Johannes Brahms: Nänie The glowing, warm setting of Schiller's funeral ode, Brahms' Nänie will contrast sharply with Orff's ever popular setting of the irreverent, suggestive, and often provocative medieval text “Carmina Burana”. Featuring: Priscilla Gale, soprano |

25th Anniversary ConcertSaturday, May 10, 2003, 8:00 PM
Gerald Finzi: Ode For St. Cecilia Jane Shivick, soprano The Mastersingers have long been champions of Finzi's music. What better way to celebrate than with his majestic Ceremonial Ode For St. Cecilia set to an Edmund Blunden text. Toward the Unknown Region by Finzi's contemporary, Vaughan Williams, is a powerful tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. We close in acknowledgement of AVM's birthday with selections from the first concert in May 1978. |
